"Neighborhoods"
A "School within a School" model has been created with several "Neighborhood" in our building staffed by teams of teachers. This concept creats a smaller, nurturing learning culture for our children and staff. These smaller communities offer many opportunities for teamwork, collaboration, and building community. Same grade classrooms are configured in each "Neighborhood."
Building a Community in the Classroom
"I do love to teach reading, writing, and math....but I have also grown to appreciate the task of helping children learn to take better care of themselves, of each other, and of their classrooms. It's not a waste. It's probably the most enduring thing that I teach. In a world filled with global violence and threats of environmental devastation where drugs and guns are easily available, learning to be decent and to build caring communities is hardly a waste of time."
Curriculum Targeting Standards
Our curriculum is centered on meeting the standards set by the state of PA and focuses on reading, writing, math, science, technology, and social studies. Teachers use a variety of materials to instruct students including published textbook series, teacher made materials, and additional published materials. Writing samples, tests, quizzes, observations, district wide assessments, and PSSA determine student's progress.

School Theme
Each year our school has a theme that is the center for all our learning. The theme for this year is - NO PLACE FOR HATE: Year 3 - BUILDING A BETTER TOMORROW! & HOOKED ON LEARNING: The FISH Philosophy
The Anti-Defamation League, in partnership with many organizations, created No Place for Hate. The program empowers schools and communities to challenge intolerance, bullying, and indifference through action and education. No Place for Hate fosters a culture of collaboration and cooperation in schools. It empowers schools and communities to promote respect for individual and group differences while challenging prejudice and bigotry. Participating schools make a public commitment to fostering respectful environment for all. Students are asked to sign a Resolution of Respect, which schools display so that everyone is aware of the commitment to diversity. Upon completion of five required steps which facilitate inter-group dialogue, inhibit tensions and promote harmony, our school will be publicly designated No Place for Hate in the fall of 2009.
