cockroaches

Eight hissing cockroaches have arrived in Mr. Standen's third grade classroom at Maple Glen Elementary School. These thumb-sized insects are part of the FOSS curriculum that several elementary school teachers are piloting this year. In the Structures of Life Unit, students learn about the hissers' special characteristics, diet, habitat, adaptations, and life cycle.

Seeing the hissers up close has students excited to learn. Mr. Standen shared that one student overcame their fear and let a hisser crawl up their arm—others even asked to skip recess to spend more time with them! Mr. Standen's class gives two thumbs up for such hands-on science!
